Use and Maintenance of the Feuerhand Oil Lamp / Storm Lamp

Or do you want to experience the same nostalgia but completely "electrified"? Then choose the LED variants of Feuerhand. Same lamp, but High Tech in a Low Tech guise. Feuerhand has managed to accurately imitate the dimmable "flame", see photo above.

The Feuerhand oil lamp / storm lamp is a classic and reliable light source that has been used for generations for lighting and atmosphere. This German storm lamp (made in Germany) is known for its durability and efficiency and with proper maintenance this lamp can last for years.

For years of more enjoyment with your lamp, we would like to go into more detail about the use and maintenance of the Feuerhand oil lamp / storm lamp.

1. Using the Feuerhand Oil Lamp / Storm Lamp

Step 1: Fill the fuel tank

The Feuerhand oil lamp storm lamp works on petroleum, lamp oil or clear paraffin oil. Petroleum (the original fuel for this lamp) is the somewhat "fatter" fuel that gives off a slightly more odor. If you want to let your light shine odor-free, we recommend using pure Feuerhand lamp oil.

Make sure the lamp is off and cooled down before filling the tank. Do not fill the tank completely (we recommend filling the tank halfway, sufficient for approximately 20 hours of light). Leave some space to prevent expansion of the fuel when heated, especially if the lamp is in full sunlight!

Step 2: Install the fuse

Turn the "" fuse knob to raise the fuse and light the fuse with a long lighter or match. Make sure that the wick is not too high, otherwise the flame may smoke or smoke.

Step 3: Adjust the flame

Using the "wick knob" you can adjust the size of the flame. A smaller flame produces less light, but also uses less fuel. Experiment with the flame height to achieve the desired brightness.

Step 4: Enjoy the light

The Feuerhand oil lamp / storm lamp emits a lively, warm and cozy light. Place the lamp on a safe, flat surface and enjoy the romantic and nostalgic feeling this lamp offers.

Transport: You always transport the lamp empty and upright, to prevent leakage at the top of the wick holder.

2. Maintenance of the Feuerhand Baby Oil Lamp Storm Lamp

Clean the lamp regularly

To ensure that your Feuerhand oil lamp / storm lamp continues to function properly, it is important to clean it regularly. Wipe the glass clean with a soft cloth and use a brush to remove any soot particles from the wick. Also clean the outside of the lamp to remove dust and dirt.

Replace the fuse if necessary

Over time, the fuse will wear out and may become less efficient. If the flame is difficult to light or burns unevenly, it may be necessary to replace the wick. Make sure you have a spare fuse on hand for such cases. (use an original Feuerhand wick of +/- 12 cm)

Check the seals

It is wise to periodically check the wick holder and the cap of the lamp for signs of wear or leakage. Replace damaged parts to prevent unnecessary fuel leakage.

Check whether the lamp is "leaking"?

If there is a light film of oil on your lantern or it appears to be leaking in some places, this often gives the impression that the storm lantern is defective or leaking. It is important to know that your Baby Special 276 storm lantern is an open system. Particularly due to this open operating principle, it provides reliable and even light. Your storm lantern is continuously supplied with oxygen via this so-called cold air system. This way the flame remains permanently alive and your lantern provides a bright light thanks to the open design. If your lantern feels greasy in places, this is not an indication that your storm lantern is defective. In almost all cases you can easily solve this yourself. Possible causes for the lantern leaking can be:

  • a tank that is too full
  • too much movement and change of position, tilting or laying flat
  • too many high temperature fluctuations
  • a fuse has been blown out way too far.

A really "leaky" lamp is very rare, but do you have a suspicion? Then check this as follows:

  • Empty the tank completely
  • Dry the lamp completely. (outside)
  • Place the lamp in a dark and cool environment, on a flat bottom edge on a piece of kitchen paper
  • Fill the tank halfway with fuel
  • Let sit for 24 hours and check the paper towel for "rings"

Is your Feuerhand really leaking and are you still within the warranty period? Please contact us. We are happy to solve it for you.

Store the lamp in a dry, dark and cool place

When you are not using the Feuerhand oil lamp / storm lamp, store it in a dry place to prevent rust formation. If you do not use the lamp for an extended period of time, it is advisable to remove the fuel from the tank to extend the life of the wick.

With proper use and maintenance, the Feuerhand Baby oil lamp storm lamp can be a reliable and atmospheric light source for many evenings and nights of enjoyment. It not only provides practical lighting, but also a touch of nostalgia and coziness to any room in which it is used.

So, light the lamp, sit back and enjoy the warm glow that this classic storm lamp provides.

Do you want to experience the same nostalgia but completely "electrified"? Then choose the LED variants of Feuerhand. Same lamp, but High Tech in a Low Tech guise.
